Creating a Professional Blog - Should You Link to Your Personal Blog?

Blogging is becoming more and more popular. It seems like everyone has something they want to say about something at some point and time and that's the way to do it. But for businesses around the world, blogs have become a great way to get the word out about their company and many of the services that are being offered. If you're the business owner there are times that your private online journal needs to stay far away from your professional one.

There are many risky subjects out there and if you're passionate about one of them, and spend a lot of time writing about it then the two shouldn't meet. You need to keep your personal and professional worlds separate. It's important for you to have a life outside your business but that doesn't mean that your clients should know how you feel on certain issues. Unless your business directly deals with those issues it's best to keep the two apart.

Another good reason to keep your personal and professional blog separate from one another: Facebook. Okay, that might not seem like a good reason but many people use their personal site to show case many of the fun aspects of their lives. It's been all over news sites about how Facebook has cost people jobs and educational opportunities. Any type of personal site that is linked to a professional one can do the same thing. If you have racy photos or comments that make you seem irresponsible it won't help your business grow it will only hurt your business.

Many people use their blogs as an outlet. It's a place where they can go write about anything. You don't want to get on their grumbling about someone you may have dealt with that day, without naming names, only to have it come back to haunt you. You have the freedom to say what you want about who you want; it's called Freedom of Speech. That doesn't mean that you need your clients or coworkers seeing this information. Best to keep it all separate.

There are times when your blogs may need to meet, depending on your subject. You might have something that your company does that you've made an excellent point about on your personal blog. If that's the case then there is little harm pushing you're clients or customers to your site. Just remember to make sure that there is nothing on the private site that could harm your reputation with your customers if you push them there.

All in all it's always better to keep your personal and professional blogs from meeting. You don't want to drive people away with what you privately believe or think. You have the right to have a personal life that has nothing to do with your business life. If you want to be a success you must first learn to leave work at work and leave home at home, even if you work from your home.
