Of the many ways to make easy money online, blogging for dollars is perhaps one of the easiest. With respect to my friends who are blogging purists -- that is, they believe that blogging should come from the heart, not the wallet -- I'm going to discuss the two main methods of making some quick cash by blogging.
Get a Blog
The very first step to blogging for moolah is to start a blog. While there are many free blogging platforms out there -- such as WordPress, Live Journal, Blogger, and many others -- using the free services will limit the amount of money you can earn.
I recommend registering a domain name along with webhosting and setting up your very own, customized, wholly you blog. Most webhosts include the ability to automatically install blogging software with the touch of a button, so you can literally be on your way with your own "you.com" website and blog within minutes.
Start Blogging
Blogging is about writing. So get writing! Try to write something new each day. If daily is too much, then do three each week. At the very least, put up two new posts each week. Doing multiple posts each week is vital because it's what search engines like to see -- which is important as we'll discuss in the next section.
I know what you're asking now. "Stu, what do I write about?"
Well, you can write about whatever you want. Whether it's politics, your personal life, music, sports, video games -- whatever. My personal blog is a pretty wild conglomeration. I write about whatever happens to be on my mind at any given moment. And you know what? I get very little traffic to it.
Whatever you write about, try sticking with a common theme and be sure to write regularly. Do that and, whatever you write about, you're going to eventually get traffic.
Get Traffic
Okay, honesty time. If you really want to max out your hit counter, then write about something extremely controversial. Then take sides with the less popular view. Then get extreme in your view. Nothing says, "Hey, come visit my website," like writing about something that almost everybody disagrees with.
But in the end, it's really about putting up new content on a regular basis. Get those three new posts per week up every week and the traffic will come.
Get Paid
There are two ways to get paid. One requires that you are getting a good amount of traffic. Over 10,000 unique visitors per month let's say. Once you have that kind of traffic, you can start charging a decent amount for ad space.
Another method requires that you have a good Google PageRank (PR). You'll find that the higher your PR, the more advertisers will be willing to pay you to simply include a link to their website within one of your blog posts. By writing multiple posts per day, some bloggers are making several thousand dollars per month. It's not much, but it'll easily pay the mortgage on a modest home.
