The dollar was falling against the yen Monday after a powerful new earthquake shook northern Japan, prompting fresh tsunami alerts that were later lifted.
Monday's 7.0 magnitude aftershock came exactly a month after an earthquake and tsunami flattened towns and damaged a nuclear plant in northern Japan. Another large aftershock hit northern Japan Thursday.
The dollar was worth 84.57 Japanese yen in midday trading in New York, down from 84.89 Japanese yen late Friday.
The Japanese yen is considered a safe-haven currency and tends to get stronger during times of turmoil. Days after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the yen reached a new record high against the dollar.
Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar was nearly unchanged against the euro Monday. The euro edged up to $1.4438 from $1.4435 late Friday.
