Blogging has become more and more popular recently and is one of the main sources of information in the internet today. There are lots of types of blogs - personal blogs, IT blogs, design blogs and so on. But, regardless of what kind of blog you have, there are some guidelines to turn your new blog into a successful one. It takes time and patience, but if you are passionate about what you do, and are ready to work, you can own a successful website in a few months.
Content is King
The content comes first as the most important thing on a page. Design and user interaction are second and third because as long as you keep the users interested in the content you provide they will keep coming.
You can write about chickens, horses, cloud computing, multimedia design or water bottles, as long as you keep it interesting. The internet is big and there is a small corner for everyone. Sure, writing about a very popular niche such as sport or TV might bring you traffic faster, but it'll make it more difficult as you will have to compete with the heavyweights.
However, though the competition is important, it doesn't matter if you provide quality content. That's the key to better blogging.
Use an appealing and simple design
Yes, content is important, but design has its importance as well. There are thousands of free and premium themes out there. Do not be afraid of playing with themes, that's the way to reach a good design. Go for a more cleaner, less cluttered theme, they are more popular today.
Once you have content and design figured out, your blog is already better than many others out there. But there are still small adjustments you need to make.
Don't do it just for the money
If you start blogging just because you want money you will most probably not be successful. If you insert tons of Google AdWords and other ads you will be seen as someone who is desperate for money and not someone who focuses on content.
If you write very well advertisers will come. They will not miss you if you are a good blogger, do the basic job that needs to be done in this industry and bring in lots of visitors each day. But advertisers are more likely to pass you by if they can see you're only in it for the money.
We get back now at point 1: content is king. It can bring you visitors and money, why not just focus on it in the beginning, let your blog grow and advertisers find you?
Be patient
I know it sounds silly, but patience is an important asset of blogging. It takes a lot of time to build a brand, and it's not easy either. That is why you will have to spend a lot of time on your blog, and be patient about everything you have to do. If you start a blog today, you won't be richer in two weeks. You won't have 100.000 visitors each day and you will definitely not have a lot of success.
Visitors come and go. If you are able to keep them, you will be successful. Five new visitors today, 7 tomorrow, 35 next week, and so on, that's how a blog and a brand grow. You can't just skip a single step when you are a blogger, you are very unlikely to be successful if you try to do it fast.
These are few tips for better blogging. Try to follow these guidelines, be patient, and success will come.
I started working in publishing 1989, involved in writing, photography and design for various magazines and newspapers. I was a freelance designer for print and web since 1995 which included a couple of stints working abroad as English teacher.
