If you've lost your job in the past few years and are struggling to find work, it is natural to begin thinking about starting your own business. In today's technology age, online businesses are growing in popularity everyday. There is still however, plenty of time to get started and you certainly are not too late.
Perhaps you've been working harder than you ever have but aren't getting paid any more. Or, you are working more hours, sometimes even for less pay, to make up for the staff that your management have cut.
Both are very common. You're sick and tired of working hard, long hours for someone else's gain and as a result you want to be your own boss.
So, is now the right time to start your own business?
My advice is typically, it can be a good time or it can't. Generally if you do your research well and your business model is rock-solid, then it wont really matter when you start up your business...
Before you even begin to start on actually building your business you need to invest some time into planning. The first thing I recommend is finding yourself a mentor - someone in the industry with a strong track record and who is well respected. Then next step you need to do is write a detailed business plan, included cashflow budgeting projections.
Now I must stress that before you actually invest your hard earned, saved or borrowed money into your business, I highly recommend that you engage a business consultant to help you throughout this planning stage and involve you banker, accountant, solicitor and financial advisor in this process.
Since the global financial crisis, a number of newpapers and media have reported findings that it is getting easier to borrow from the banks and seek finance to start your business. Do take this with a grain of salt. There are still complaints that credit is tight and that may well be the case.
With that in mind, again I come to the benefit of online businesses. It is very realistic and possible to start an online business for free and to build it up without any need for finance. Again this comes back to having a great mentor. There are also a myriad of online business opportunities that you can buy into for less than $500 so again this should negate the need for finance. All you really need is access to a computer, with internet access of course. There are very little overhead or ongoing costs and as the average person already has a computer and internet access, you really can get started straight away.
In summary, plan, seek advice from experts, weigh up your risks vs benefits and above all else you need passion, motivation and a burning desire to succeed!
